I recently read an eBook about generating traffic through Craigslist.  The author of the eBook really made Craigslist sound like a no brainer, but honestly, it didn’t take much to twist my arm.  With almost 50 million people a month (yes a month) visiting the site, it seemed pretty tempting.

So, I thought I would test how much traffic I could generate by putting a help wanted ad in a few cities that Craigslist covers.  Now, granted, I did have an ulterior motive.  It wasn’t all about driving traffic.  I really am looking for a few people to hire if I can find the right applicants.

Let me tell you what I liked and didn’t like about Craigslist…

What I liked….

About 20 minuets of the ads going live I started getting emails.  At first glance, it seemed pretty cool. 

But then…

…But then, I got a virus.  That sucked.  I was getting a few qualified emails, but honestly, the majority of them were spam or scams.  I stopped opening any emails with attachments I didn’t recognize. I know, seems pretty stupid on my part to open up attachments in the first place, but with people sending me resumes in different formats, or even directing me to web pages to see their resumes (where virus are often hidden)  it didn’t seem like I had much of a choice.  That is until I got my second virus.  That too sucked.  So I decided to make people jump through some hoops and used an offer form.  Believe it or not, that actually worked and DRASTICALLY cut down on the spam/scams/viruses.

But, so did the number of qualified people.  In fact, it almost seemed to me that after I made people jump through hoops to prove they were real people, I received very few responses.  So, as a traffic source, I would have to say Craigslist isn’t the best.  You can generate a few quick hits, but they are not very qualified.  (Not to say that there were no qualified applicants, it was just very time consuming to weed through the amount of spam/scams to make it worth while.  So not only did I not generate decent traffic, but I also didn’t find anyone to hire.
